SPOTLIGHT ON A GRADRon MayerHouse of Heavilin Beauty Colleges has had over 2,000 graduates. We think it’s about time you meet some of them. We have alumni that have made it to Hollywood to some that have come back to teach others. Each month we will spotlight one of our grads and show you what your journey could become by just making the decision to enroll in school. January 2009
Ron Mayer
Ron had worked in the finance industry for 10 years, but in the back of his mind he knew there was something else waiting for him. He hit a point in his life that he realized he wanted something more. He thought long and hard about what he really wanted to do for the rest of his life. This is when the idea of Sole Patch was born. Ron loves music and he knew that he wanted to do something that would make people feel good about themselves while incorporating his love for music.
Ron had been introduced to Mr. Heavilin through a mutual business associate and came in to our Blue Springs Campus to get some information. He asked a lot of questions and looked around. Ron enrolled and started school in October of 2005. He had a goal in mind and found that it wasn’t as easy to reach as he had originally hoped. Ron’s advice for any one going through this process is “Live in the moment, don’t worry about what is going to happen next week or next month. Learn what you need to learn, develop your process and take it a day at a time. “
Eventually Ron’s dream started to become more of a reality and he realized that if Sole Patch was ever going to be the premier upper-end men’s barbershop in Kansas City he needed to know how to cut every type of hair. He transferred to our Troost location to learn ethnic hair. Looking back he feels that was the best move he made. Ron graduated in November of 2006 and a year to the day later Sole Patch opened.
Sole Patch is located in Prairie Village, KS and it is a full service barbershop. He kept true to his love of music and created a Guitar Lounge in the barbershop. It is inspired by the old tradition of the barbershop quartet. They host privately sponsored live acoustic music events.
In 2008 Ron had an experience on ABC’s The Bachelorette. Although Ron wasn’t chosen he doesn’t look at it as being rejected “I didn’t get rejected. She just chose other guys.” And: “Sometimes a tree gets knocked down before it gets to bear fruit.”
Ron’s goals are to open up additional Sole Patch Barbershops. He has no regrets and he is still in his journey and isn’t sure what his path may be come.
