Back to School Cut-a-thon to benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Kara Kopetsky Fund A HUGE SUCCESS!! We have just completed our final cut-a-thon at the Troost location. All is packed up and funds accounted for, our efforts successful and our rewards great. Yet, it is my pride in all of you that is overwhelming my soul. If that is the reward, it was worth all the effort. Each and everyone of you contributed in your greatest capacity, taking joy in a day of good worth and good cheer. Each school had their special moments; and thanks to Shelley and Kari those moments are on film… Check out myspace.com/house of heavilin Week 1, August 6th. Blue Springs 97 haircuts $485.00 to NCMEC $203.00 Kopetsky Fund Blue Springs had a "Chicken dance" craze with students dancing like escapee's from the movie "Chicken Run". Shara ran across the street, hitting up the construction workers, who spray painted their rig "5.00cut ←" News cameras were rolling, guests were looking good, Ms. Debbie and Ms. Frieda making sure the yellow ribbons were evident everywhere for the cause. Ms Julie encouraged the esthi's to join in with waxing and hand facials, relaxing waiting parents as their children were photographed and fingerprinted by the Blue Springs Police Department…probably feeling like they were part of one of those crime shows their parents watch. The Beckford's arrived (Kara's parents) and the family received their haircuts. Young Thomas looked especially hip with his new spiked haircut. But my favorite moment was the young man and woman I badgered to buy a raffle ticket and with quarters and dimes in hand, bought two tickets. I told him not to worry, he would get his money back… and as Thomas drew the raffle tickets, the couple both won over $ 35.00 worth of prizes. Oh, how wonderful it was to see in action the higher laws of prosperity come into fruition. Week 2, August 13th. Grandview 50 haircuts $250.00 to NCMEC $270.00 Kopetsky Fund Yellow Ribbons Everywhere…..Grandview started the day off with great cheer, everyone geared for a day of activities. Farmers Insurance set up in the classroom, offering indenti-kid CD's of children's pertinent information. Once again, music was hip-hoppin', thanks to our DJ Pink… even Ms. Tira (who does not dance?) was doing the "Cupid Shuffle"! Haircuts were happening everywhere. Our ladies were out on Blue Ridge, landing a cover photograph in the Kansas City Star. Ms. Cathi and Rose were featured on the Star website giving little Louis a haircut. His mom expressed to me she was happy she found us, as it was a great haircut! Here came Thomas, to do the drawing of the raffle tickets. Added to our bevy of prizes were Royal tickets and a signed Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Glove! One gentleman even bought $100.00 worth of tickets to win that glove, sad to say No luck…our own Theresa had the luck of the Irish that day…every tip she made, she bought a ticket and she ended up winning 4 gifts and the Boxing Glove! Week 3, August 20th. Troost 29 haircuts $145.00 to NCMEC $433.00 Kopetsky Fund The day started with a lot of anticipation. Everyone was ready to have a great day. With haircuts, services and student participation well under way, we were having a blast! Ms. Joyce hit the floor, singing and dancing to the classics of Motown, at one point looking like a true entertainer with her back up singers. Linda from Farmers Insurance was setup, giving children their cookies after they completed the Ident-kid information. The hair-cuts were strolling in a little slow, though one guy had heard about the event from Craiglist! Kari was do her DJ thing, while Ms. Shelley was multi-talented as an instructor, solid gold dancer and photographer rolled into one. Reporters from Channel 9 and FOX4 paid us a visit. Yet, the highlight of the day was the girls taking to the street to drum up donations. Cardboard signs in hand, Ms. Amber and Ms. Rhonda standing along with them, calling to passing cars. Many people pulled over to donate and the dollar amount of the day proved they were quite successful! We had lovely gifts for the raffle, many donated by students and their employers, we even had a large Maple Tree with installation for winning, along with another Sugar Ray glove and two sets of Royals tickets! Once again, the Beckford's were present and Thomas drew the winners of the day. We were delighted to announce our donations to the NCMEC and Kara's Fund. Total Donations $880.00 NCMEC $ 906.00 Kara Kopetsky Fund Well, that about sums it up… the event was successful beyond my imagination. And not for the dollar amount, but for the love amount, the fun amount, the community amount. I wasn't surprised about the love that shined through, but I was surprised the cardboard signs were such a hit! I look forward to next year and invite you all to join us. It is in giving, that we receive. Sincerely, Lisa
