Bouncing Back: The Industry That Just Won’t Quit

While COVID-19 has had businesses’ doors shuttered, and people stuck at home , we’ve been looking toward the future. To brighter days, and busy salon floors. Trending with history, beauty salons always see growth when a recession ends, and we know this will be no different.
In the US, according to a 2019 Professional Beauty Association (PBA) report, the salon and spa industry boasted more than 1.2 million businesses bringing in more than $57 billion in sales. It’s always been a booming industry, since even in times of hardship people will take the time to treat themselves. Hair will always grow, and spa days will always be a special treat to share with a friend.

Once doors are open, salon floors will flood with clientele for a few reasons. First, those of us who color their hair will be clamoring to get those roots touched up, eyebrows will need shaped, nails filled, and legs will need waxed. These are things you can attempt to DIY, but can not replicate to perfection at home. It isn’t something that can be automated, and there’s no app for that, so stylists and technicians can be confident that their clientele will come back, and they’ll likely bring friends.

Second, people will be looking for safe spaces to go as they start to venture out from their homes. With the reopening of businesses a lot of people will still feel skeptical about going places like restaurants and bars, but salons already take precautions every single day to keep strict sanitation standards. Each stylist, esthetician, and nail technician is required to take sanitation courses and put it to real life use before they get their license, and clients will take comfort in that, and actually be able to enjoy themselves again.

So what does all of this mean for you? If you find yourself sitting at home, wanting a career change, or wanting to do something that will guarantee you have a career regardless of what a recession might throw at you, consider a career in a cosmetology field.
